The Holiday (New Pro Cam testing trip!), Flims and the girl from Sochi…

2014.05.22

We decided back in early 2013 that we’d take our Children Skiing again and it would give me a chance to play and test the new cams that we were thinking of launching and in particular the New Action Cam Pro.

Flims is a small place in Switzerland 1.5hrs from Zurich so it’s super easy to get to. I’d been there once before but it was in a really bad Year of Snow in the Alps and my favourite place was always St Anton in Austria…there was never any room for another place…until now.

Before I left, I called Flims-Laax Marketing department to see if they could help me hook up with any locals to show me about…the answer was a flat NO, they were sponsored by GoPro…Well this wasn’t starting off well was it?! “Why would this place be sponsored by GoPro??” I couldn’t help wonder…it wasn’t that good when I was last there…

Well I got there and was blown away by the changes they had made to Flims-Laax. The Snow park up on top (actually there’s 4 Snow park’s) are on steroids – it’s massive! You’ve also got loads of tracked piste “off-piste” runs too which the piston bullies do not touch which is great for Skiers and Boarders.

Burton Boards have got a Test Centre at the top and everywhere you look, there’s something that makes the adrenalin kick in. There’s kickers, massive kickers…Olympic sized kickers!!! There’s rails, half pipes (a Super Pipe and mini pipe!), jumps…more jumps…waves (big rolling jumps on the piste – I face planted on these). There’s even a Freestyle Academy - Europe's first indoor freestyle training centre so there's something available for every level of ability.

If you are a beginner Skier / Boarder, it’s no problem – the resort is a fantastic place to learn. It’s a hidden gem…it’s quiet, the ski runs to the town are easy to deal with and my kids loved the place.

I got to Flims just after the Winter Olympics and watched most of the Snowboarding as well as the Skiing. Fresh in my mind was the Ladies Slopestyle Snowboarding event. I’d recorded it on my Sky+ because I’d gone out to my weekly Boxing session down the gym but still wanted to watch and support Team GB.

I remember that Saturday Morning so well, watching Jenny Jones run and then having to wait for 10 other Olympians to complete their final run and see if she could hang on to a medal. She was still in Bronze but had to wait for 2 riders to complete their Final Run….Sina Candrian was one of the 2 riders.

(Snowboarder / Athlete - Sina Candrian from Flims-Laax)

Sina put down an amazing run and landed a first ever front 1080 in a women’s contest but was just .25 points behind Jenny and a medal – fortunately for Jenny, Sina put her hand down and if she had landed that clean, she would have had a medal. She went all out for it.

Back to Flims, I was out testing my cams and I met a cool guy called Marco whilst getting kitted out with my Board – he was a little amused with the fact I had 3 or 4 Action cameras fixed on my helmet, wrist, leg - everywhere basically. We got chatting and talked about Sochi…this is when I found out Sina was from Flims and that he was friends with her.

Cutting a long story short, I was introduced and met Sina. She is one the nicest people you could meet and I was lucky to spend some time with her. She is so passionate about Snowboarding and has been boarding since 5 Years old! We had a great evening when we first met but after far too many drinks (for me anyway) everyone did take too much enjoyment of teasing my jumping skills and after I made a mistake of showing them a photo of my skills! I did explain I was British, 41 and Skied / Boarded at most once a Year for 1 week since I was 14 vs the Swiss standard of starting skiing at 2 Years old and skiing every week!!  Another evening we went out for a meal with Marco, Sina and a small group. What struck me about everyone I met in Flims was that they treated me as one of their family….I had such a great time.

I love Team GB, was so pleased for Jenny Jones and Great Britain and what it would mean to inspire more youngsters to try Snowboarding BUT I’m now a massive personal supporter of Sina Candrian – she rocks.  I hope you will follow her to during next Seasons Winter Season – we’ll keep you posted!

Check out her doing a Frontside 1080 in Flims-Laax and you can read little more about her here...http://www.ridehead.com/snowboard/team/?region=de&id=178

This is also some of our Test Video footage from the NEW Pro Cam we've just launched this week hitting the big kickers….it wasn’t me….it was Marco…..I’d tried and failed on some of the smaller ones!!

I'm definitely going to write a lot more about Flims-Laax but now it's Summer....I'll get back to you when we start thinking about Winter again...hope you like Sina's Frontside 1080.
