Choosing a Mountain Bike Helmet Light
A helmet light does something a bar-mounted light cannot: it points where you look. On twisting singletrack that matters more than raw output, because a bar light throws its beam straight ahead while you are already looking through the corner. Most riders who ride seriously after dark end up running both — a bar light for the ground immediately ahead, and a helmet light for where they are heading next.
How many lumens do you actually need?
More than people assume, but less than the marketing suggests. As a rough guide for off-road riding:
- 400–600 lumens — adequate for towpaths, fire roads and commuting on unlit lanes.
- 800–1,100 lumens — the sweet spot for genuine trail riding. Enough to pick out roots and rocks at speed without draining the battery in an hour.
- 1,500+ lumens — useful for fast descending, but runtimes drop sharply and the extra output is often wasted on slower technical sections.
Lumen figures are also not directly comparable between brands, because beam pattern matters as much as raw output. A well-focused 1,100 lumen light will out-perform a poorly designed 2,000 lumen one on the trail.
Helmet light or bar light?
A bar light gives you a stable, wide pool of light and shows up surface texture — ruts, roots, loose gravel — because the beam comes in at a shallow angle. What it cannot do is look round corners.
A helmet light follows your eyeline. You get light exactly where your attention already is, which is why it feels so much more natural on twisty trails. The trade-off is that because the beam comes from your eye level, it flattens out surface detail and casts fewer shadows.
If you are buying one light, and you mostly ride singletrack, buy the helmet light. If you ride fast fire road descents, start with a bar light. If you ride regularly in winter, you will end up with both.
Runtime in practice
Published runtimes assume constant output on one setting. In reality most riders spend the majority of a ride on the middle setting and only reach for full power on descents. Running this light that way, you will comfortably get through a typical two to three hour winter loop.
The battery sits at the front rather than in a separate pack, which keeps the weight balanced and means no cable running down to a rear-mounted battery — one less thing to snag or unplug on a branch.
Helmet Light FAQs
Will this fit any mountain bike helmet?
It mounts using an adjustable strap system that fits the vent pattern on the vast majority of MTB helmets, including most full-face lids. Helmets with unusually small or fully closed vents can be trickier. The light is aluminium and reasonably compact, with the battery integrated at the front rather than in a separate pack, so it does not create the pendulum effect you get with rear-mounted battery designs. How long does the battery last?
Around 2 hours on full 1,100 lumen output, roughly 3 hours on the 800 lumen middle setting, and considerably longer on low. Most riders find the middle setting is enough for general trail riding and save full power for descents, which stretches a charge across a typical evening ride comfortably. Cold weather reduces runtime on any lithium battery, so expect shorter figures in deep winter than in autumn.
Is it waterproof enough for British winters?
Yes. The body is aluminium and weatherproofed for rain, spray and mud, which is what you will actually meet on a winter trail ride. It is weather resistant rather than designed for submersion, so it is not intended for river crossings or jet washing directly at close range. Rinse mud off gently rather than blasting it, and dry the charging port before plugging in.
What is the difference between this and the 800 lumen version?
This Pro model uses dual CREE XML2 LEDs against a single LED in the standard 800 lumen version, giving noticeably more output and a broader spread of light. The beam is adjustable on both. If you ride genuine technical trails after dark, or descend at speed, the extra output is worth having. If you mostly ride canal paths, fire roads or unlit commutes, the 800 lumen version is plenty and saves you thirty pounds.
Can I use it as a head torch?
Yes, and plenty of customers do — for running, walking, camping and working on the car. We also sell a dedicated headtorch version with a head strap rather than a helmet mount. If you want one light for both helmet and head use, this model plus the separate headtorch bracket covers it.
